Isabel Perón

Isabel Perón

María Estela Martínez Cartas (born 1931), best known as Isabelita, was the first woman in human history to exercise the presidency of a republican and democratic country. She was Perón's third wife, and during his third presidency she became both first lady and vice president. She was president from July 1st, 1974 (after Perón's death) till March 24th, 1976 (when she was overthrown by a military coup). Her presidency was characterized by a lack of solid ridership which led to the infiltration of far-right members in her government and the subsequent loss of individual rights.
