Ethel è una cameriera che aspira a migliorare la sua condizione quando si innamora del lattaio Ernest e lo sposa, mettendo poi alla luce il piccolo Raymond. I tre vivono nella Londra degli anni Quaranta nel periodo in cui i bombardamenti tedeschi seminano il terrore in città. Mentre Raymond viene mandato al sicuro in campagna, Ethel ed Ernest cercano nella vita di tutti i giorni di fare fronte alla guerra.
